Omschrijving | Bacterial biofilms are a major cause of biomaterial (implant) failure. This course will introduce bacterial biofilms in a detailed manner, focusing on their interactions with biomaterials. An overview of bacterial biofilm properties, including, but not limited to, biofilm formation, metabolism, interactions with surfaces will be covered. Additionally, how biofilms are formed and modelled in the laboratory and how to measure their mechanical properties. This will further be related to oral biofilms (dental plaque) as a means for mechanical and chemical control methods. After completing this course, students should have a full understanding of the pathogenic nature of bacterial biofilms, as well as a developing understanding of the probiotic nature of bacterial biofilms, and their ongoing competition within the human body. | ||||||||||||
