Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:

reproduce the main concepts and open problems of low and high mass star formation

formulate basic models to describe the star and planet formation process

estimate relevant time scales and spatial scales related to star and planet formation

derive equilibria (chemical, thermal and physical) relevant to star and planet formation (SPF)

discuss critically recent observations and models (as published in the literature)
Omschrijving The course discusses a) the current theory of low and high mass star formation, and the similarities as well as differences between them (plus the initial mass function); b) observations on low and high mass star formation; c) the theory of planet formation in proto-planetary disks, both from the dust (coagulation/fragmentation) and gas (chemistry/thermodynamics) perspective; d) current and future observational developments in proto-planetary disks.
