Leerdoelen At the end of the course the student is able to:
1. present and describe the main stellar processes and how the effects can be measured in a physically meaningful way.
2. present and describe the important processes of nucleosynthesis
3. determine the properties of a star from the analysis of its optical spectrum.
4. determine the properties of the intergalactic medium from an optical spectrum.
5. determine how stellar evolution affects galactic evolution.
6. apply the concepts learned to create a galactic chemical evolution model
Omschrijving This course will take a practical (observational) perspective of how we study individual stars to determine properties of chemical evolution of nearby stellar systems over the entire history of the Universe. It will make the link between the detailed chemical properties of individual stars and our understanding of the early history of the Universe and the beginnings of galaxy formation and their subsequent growth into the complex systems we see today. The course will include an overview of the different types of stellar nucleosynthesis that drive the evolution of chemical elements in the interiors of stars, and how we can measure the elements in the photospheres of nearby stars. We will look at the different physical processes that can be traced by different chemical elements over different time scales, including alpha-elements, neutron-capture elements, light elements and even radioactive elements. We will fit this into the chemical evolution modelling of galaxies and the intergalactic medium.
