Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:

1.
identify the ingredients of advanced quantum mechanical calculations: to determine what is the applicable Hamiltonian, what are the boundary or initial conditions on the wave functions and what are the relevant quantum numbers.

2.
perform concrete calculations either by exact solution or by using the approximation methods of perturbation theory and the variational principle.

3.
judge the applicability of an approximation method by checking whether the approximate answer satisfies the conditions under which the approximation is valid.
Omschrijving This module continues where Quantum Physics 1 left off. The following topics will be dealt with. Angular momentum: eigenvalues and eigenfunctions, addition of angular momenta, Clebsch-Gordan coefficients. The Schrödinger equation in three dimensions: the free particle, a charged particle in a magnetic field, the hydrogen atom. Time independent perturbation theory: degenerate and non-degenerate, fine and hyperfine structure of the hydrogen atom, Zeeman and Stark effect. Variational method. Time dependent perturbation theory. Emission and absorption of radiation.
