Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1. describe the basic characteristics of the atmosphere and the earth’s energy budget;
2. interpret climatological patterns of wind, temperature, and precipitation;
3. apply a variety of major equations to solve simplified atmosphere problems;
4. integrate general principles to understand large to global-scale circulations of the atmosphere and the ocean.
Omschrijving The main objective of the course is to educate students with the basic characteristics of the earth climate system, particularly the part related to the atmosphere, and to train students to use the basic physical laws to describe and interpret atmospheric movements as well as large to global-scale circulations of atmosphere and ocean.

Entreevoorwaarden • The prerequisites of the course are Calculus 1, and 2, Linear Algebra, Thermodynamics;
• Experience of using a scripting language (high-level programming language) is preferred, such as R, Matlab, Python;
• If not all prerequisites are met, an intake talk is necessary.
Opmerkingen The final mark will be weighted as 0.2 x homework + 0.3 x project + 0.5 x written exam. The project will be evaluated based on the submitted report and the programming source code. The written exam evaluates knowledge (~20%) (Objective 1), comprehension (~20%) (Objective 2), and application (~60%) (Objectives 3&4). The project report and the written exam must be evaluated 5.0 or above to pass.
