Leerdoelen The general aim of the course is to give a rigourous treatment of the fundamental laws that govern fluid flow and to solve simple boundary value problems to analyze fluid phenomena in nature and engineering applications.
Upon completion of the course, the student is able to:
1) derive the partial differential equations that describe fluid motion by starting from the conservation laws of mass, momentum and energy;
2) apply the Bernoulli equation and the integral formulations of mass and momentum to solve simple transport problems;
3) solve the continuity and Navier-Stokes equations for relevant boundary value problems in the limit of inviscid and fully viscous flows.
Omschrijving The course will start with a description of fluids at rest (continuum hypothesis, surface tension and capillarity, hydrostatics) and dimensional analysis (Pi-theorem, dynamic similarity), followed by an overview of the fundamental equations that govern the motion of fluids, e.g. integral formulations of mass, momentum and energy conservation, a constitutive description of Newtonian fluids, Navier-Stokes equations, Ideal (inviscid) flow, Laminar (viscous) flow. In the final part of the course, emphasis will be placed on two specialized topics, i.e. microfluidics and biofluidics.
