Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to: 1. Know the basic physical and chemical processes related to the emission and atmospheric fate of particulate and gaseous pollutants 2. Solve problems problems related to aerosol physics as well as the formation and transport of pollutants using the relevant physical or chemical equations 3. Explain the atmospheric concentrations, health and climate effects of pollutants based on their physicochemical properties and atmospheric dynamics 4. Conduct and evaluate an experiment of measuring particle concentrations using a personal sampler and write a concise and clear project report 5. Evaluate an air quality data set using exploratory data analysis

Omschrijving Bad air quality is a serious problem worldwide and estimated to cause more premature deaths than e.g., malaria. The goal of this course is to give students a understanding about the physics and chemistry of air pollution. The main focus of this course is not on numbers and figures, but rather on the physical and chemical processes related to particulate (aerosol) and gaseous atmospheric pollutants. The first lectures cover basic principles of aerosol physics and chemistry as well as gas phase chemistry. This knowledge subsequently used to study emission sources of pollutants, their fate in the atmosphere and effects on health and climate. The course also covers modern measurement methods and gives a brief introduction of modelling atmospheric pollutants. The course consists of 11 lectures alternated with 5 tutorials used to discuss problems that are designed to deepen the understanding of the material and prepare students for the midterm and final exam. The course will also contain a an experimental with opportunity for the students to design their own experiment to measure and evaluate aerosol pollution using personal samplers.

Entreevoorwaarden To follow this course the student should be able to (i) solve simple ordinary differential equations, (ii) have a basic understanding of thermodynamics (e.g. Gibbs free energy) (iii) have a basic understanding of statistical mechanics

Opmerkingen The maximum number of points to be earned in this course is 100. The final exam is 55 points, the midterm teats are 15 points each and the project report is also 15 points. In the tutorials max. 1 point can be earned per successfully presented problem, max 10 extra points can be earned in total/student. Mandatory The introduction to the practicum, the presentation of the project plan and the presentation of the project results are mandatory. If students are not able to make it with good reason, they have one chance of scheduling a different appointment with the teaching assistant, as long as it is earlier than the scheduled results presentation. This course was registered last year with course code WBPH15000
