Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:

1. define wave properties such as wavelength, frequency, propagation number etc. and knows how these relate to each other.
2. use the required calculational tools in the field of differentiation, integration and vector calculus.
3. reproduce and explain the derivations of formulae that were discussed in detail in the lectures.
4. apply a given concept and/or formulae to a practical situation and perform a numerical calculation.
5. review the properties of electromagnetic waves and discuss aspects of their interaction with matter (reflection, refraction, propagation).
6. after examining a given practical situation, identify the relevant concepts related to the superposition of waves (notably interference and diffraction).
7. explain the relationship between the physical phenomenon of interference/diffraction and the mathematical tools of convolution and Fourier transform.
8. perform an accurate experiment based on a list of instructions and present the measurement results and their analysis in a clear way.
9. given scientific literature (article, patent, ...) identify and explain relevant concepts.
Omschrijving General description of waves and introduction of the relevant concepts. Electromagnetic waves and their propagation. The superposition of waves. Polarization. Interference. Diffraction. Fourier optics.
