Uitgebreide vaknaam Subatomic Physics
Leerdoelen The student has a factual knowledge-base about nuclear, hadron and
elementary particle physics. The student can explain central concepts
in subatomic physics, such as symmetries and conservation laws,
scattering cross section and form factor, the relation between mass
excess and instability, and quantum oscillations. The student can apply
concepts and models, such as the CKM mechanism, quark model or liquid
drop model, for calculations and to solve practical problems related to
subatomic physics.
Omschrijving The objective of the course is to give the student a broad
introduction into the physics of systems smaller than the atom.
Topics that will be covered are the atomic nucleus, hadrons and the
elementaire fermions, the interactions between them and the resulting
phenomenology. Concepts are introduced following their historical
development and placed in their modern context.

The lectures cover Chapters 1-3 and 5-6 of the book, and Chapter 9
permitting time. Remaining Chapters are recommended as background
material and not tested.
