Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1. The student acquires and can reproduce a factual knowledge basis about modern physics, from a first preview of quantum mechanics to applications in atomic, nuclear, and particle physics, and cosmology.
2. The student will be able to apply central concepts of modern physics, such as the equivalence of energy and mass, wave-particle duality, the uncertainty principle, bosons and fermions, and the exclusion principle.
3. The student will be able to calculate in natural units and dimensions, and without the use of a pocket calculator compute simple physics problems.
Omschrijving The main objective of the course is to give the students an introduction to the modern view on the structure of matter at different length scales, based on the two major revolutions of 20th–century physics: the special theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. Topics that will be covered are taken from the physics of atoms, nuclei, elementary particles, and the cosmos. There will also be focus on applications of these topics in fundamental physics to current research and society.

(60% written tests that will take place at five specific moments, and test the different chapters; 20% for student presentations that the learning communities will organize, prepare and perform as a group; 20% for individual reading assignments and annotations, based on the Perusall platform.)
