Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1. describe and explain the underlying physical mechanisms behind a large number of advanced technologies that are currently widely applied in our society.
2. give a description of one specific example of modern technology and to explain the underlying physical mechanisms in an oral presentation.
Omschrijving Starting with concrete examples from daily life (like photocopier, electric power network, radio, microwave oven, computer chip with MOSFETS, solar cell, LED, Laser, CD/DVD, USB/flash-memory and medical imaging and radiation technologies) the direct link between their operation and the physical laws enabling this is clarified in detail. The standard approach in physics is to start with (explaining) theory and phenomena and then (much) later make the connection with applications. Here, we reverse the approach: we start with concrete advanced technologies used in daily life and we unravel the physics that is behind the operation of these technologies. In this way we address electricity, electromagnetism, electromagnetic waves, optics and aspects of solid state physics.
