Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1. - describe and explain the role of the length scale in physics;
2. - describe and explain the basic principles of quantum mechanics and to solve simple problems (of the level of the one reported in the book);
3. - will be able to explain the characterizing physical features of atoms, molecules and solids;
4. - will be able to enumerate the physical features of several low dimensional systems starting from the knowledge on their dimensions;
5. - will be able to identify which tools should be used to measure a specific property of a nano object;
6. - will be able to estimate the technological importance of nanophysics.
Omschrijving The main objective of the course is to give the students an overview of physics at different length scales, with special emphasis to the phenomena occurring between the nanometer and the micrometer scale. To do that an introduction to quantum mechanics together with an introduction to basic concepts in solid state physics is given. Several relevant examples of physical properties at the nanoscale are studied, the measuring tools necessary for the discovery of the properties are introduced and the relevance for technology is discussed.

Opmerkingen The students need to have at least 5 in the exam and at least 5 in the poster. Then the two marks will be averaged. The passing mark is 5.5.
The average mark of the homeworks (3 of them) can be used as a bonus, when at least 5 is obtained in the exam. The homework mark is averaged only if it result in an advantage for the student, otherwise the exam mark will be used.
