Omschrijving  This is a truly hybrid course in which all education is done online, except for the practicals, that take place onsite for making measurements only. Nestor/Blackboard is the central place of organization. The course unit consists of two parts: Theory of Error Analysis (Basics of experimenting and statistics) During the lectures in Error Analysis, the basic principles of the analysis of measurement results and the role of errors in measurements will be addressed. Tutorials are linked to the lectures to acquire practical skills in carrying out error analysis of an experiment. The lectures will address concepts including classification of errors, probability distributions for various types of measurements, mean value and standard deviation. Propagation of errors, weighted mean and the method of least squares will also be addressed. The lectures in Error Analysis will be concluded with a written examination. Introductory Practical The Introductory Practical will consist of several relatively short experiments. The experiments are aimed at gaining experience in the use of measuring equipment and the analysis of measurement results (error analysis). Three physical constants will be determined in these experiments:  the speed of light in vacuum;  the charge to mass ratio of the electron;  the Planck constant (ratio of photon energy to frequency of electromagnetic radiation). In the lectures, the development of increasingly accurate measuring of these fundamental quantities will be outlined. The practicals will be conducted alone and onsite. A plan of action for taking measurements will have to be drawn up for each experiment, and recorded in a laboratory journal, together with all the other relevant information, the measurements and the working out of these.
