Leerdoelen The main objective of this course is to present the complex phenomena taking place in fluids and plasma’s using the uniform approach based on describing the evolution of the distribution function. The main attention will be spent to clarify the link between elementary processes and macroscopical properties of the substance. The taught subjects will be illustrated by the examples taken from current experimental and theoretical research topics in nanoscience, plasma physics, fluid dynamics and combustion. Learning goals: Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to : • calculate cross sections of elastic collisions for different potentials of interaction between particles. • describe the evolution of a physical/chemical system in time due to collisional processes. • explain the relaxation processes and estimate the rate of approach of a system to the equilibrium. • identify and explain relations between molecular transport processes and bulk fluid properties such as viscosity, heat conductivity and diffusion coefficients. • identify the simplifications done in the models commonly used in the physical and chemical kinetics. • make estimations of characteristic times of collisional processes with one order accuracy using the simplified models, similarity principles and dimensional analysis.
