Omschrijving  This course gives an overview of Chaos Theory which forms a subfield of Dynamical Systems Theory. Dynamical Systems Theory concerns the evolution of systems in time. Examples include mechanical and electrical systems, like the solar system, pendula, and RLCnetworks. Besides such systems that are modelled by differential equations also systems with discretetime evolution modelled by the iteration of a map are of interest. An example is the evolution of a population size of some biological species from one year to the next. As has been shown by Edward Lorenz, Robert May, Michel Henon, Mitchell Feigenbaum and others the time evolution of even seemingly simple systems can be very irregular and intricate with features of random behaviour. Following the work of Henri Poincare and Steven Smale, Chaos Theory provides the mathematical tools to describe such behaviour and give conditions for its occurrence.
