Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:

- name and draw structures of molecules containing functional groups, including conformations and configurations.
- reproduce and propose a mechanism including drawing mechanism arrows.
- reproduce and recognize addition reactions on aldehydes, ketones and carboxylic acid derivatives including imine formation and (hemi)-acetal formation.
- describe and apply structural and reactivity characteristics of amines.
- recognize and reproduce conjugate addition reaction compared to direct addition reactions.
- recognize and apply enol and enolate formation of aldehydes, ketones and carboxylic acid derivatives in the formation of carbon-carbon and carbon-hydrogen bonds.
- recognize and apply the concepts presented in the learning objectives 1-6 to glycans and peptides.
Omschrijving This course provides basic understanding of important concepts of organic chemistry, with a focus on chemical structure and reactivity in nature.

Topics include:

1. conformations and configurations of molecules
2. drawing of reaction mechanisms
3. reactions with carbonyl groups
4. reactions with carboxyl groups
5. reactions with amines
6. synthesis of glycans and peptides
