Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:

1.explain the structure of prokaryotic cells.
2.explain the various types of metabolic energy conservation.
3.explain the main types of microbial metabolism, e.g. glycolysis and TCA cycle, amino acid and lipid synthesis, and the cycles for carbon and nitrogen.
4.explain different types of microbial culturing methods and their analysis, e.g. batch growth and chemostat growth.
5.explain main concepts of microbial genetics and gene regulation including the interaction with the environment.
6.explain the common methods in microbial phylogeny.
7.explain how microorganisms can be harnessed for applications in industrial and clinical sectors and explain general bioengineering concepts.
Omschrijving This Microbiology course provides an overview of concepts in microbial physiology and ecology with a specific focus on biotechnological and industrial applications of these concepts.

This course involves:
- Structure of the Prokaryotic cell, including the composition of the cell wall, lipid membranes and the architecture of the cytoplasm;
- Growth of microorganisms, including growth kinetics, nutrient requirements, growth on surfaces and in solution, environmental factors, and microbial communities.
- Microbial central carbon metabolism and energy transduction, including basic principles of redox reactions, substrate-level, and oxidative phosphorylation.
- Microbial genetics, including the flow of genetic information in bacteria, the architecture of promoters, and how this knowledge can be used for engineering microbes with new functions.
- Metabolic diversity, including carbon, and nitrogen cycle; aerobic versus anaerobic growth, respiration versus fermentation; chemolithotrophy, phototrophy, and heterotrophy.
- Taxonomy, including phylogeny and methods to determine evolutionary relatedness.
- Industrial microbiology, including biotechnology, synthetic biology, and its applications.

(Lectures: 30 hours. Tutorials: 6 hours.)
Toetsvorm Meerkeuze toets (MC), Schriftelijk tentamen (WE), Tussentoets (IT)
(Interim test (30%), multiple choice exam (35%), written exam with open questions (35%). The multiple choice exam + open question exam together are the final exam. All three exam components need together to be above 5.5)
