Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:

1. identify, summarize and present a research article's line of reasoning in a comprehensive manner
2.critically analyse and evaluate a scientific research article
3.write and present in an academic style
4.explain basic concepts and methods related to 3D structural imaging of macromolecules
Omschrijving The course provides a training of academic skills, focusing on the critical reading, interpretation and communication of scientific research papers. Students will follow a program consisting of lectures, tutorials and assignments on a relevant scientific topic in the research area of life sciences and technology with a focus on high resolution imaging of bio-macromolecular structures. A few scientific papers related to the topic will be selected for critical reading. In the lectures students will receive general information on scientific reading and writing, as well as basic scientific and technical background on the topic, allowing them to understand and discuss the selected papers. During tutorials the content of the papers will be discussed in small groups. Students learn to distinguish structure - elements such as motive, purpose, arguments and conclusions - in the text of research papers using the Scientific Argumentation Model (SAM). With the help of assignments, students will practise how to extract and summarize relevant information from a scientific paper, interpret scientific data presented in figures and tables and critically evaluate main results and conclusions. During a computer workshop, the students will learn how to visualize and analyse protein structures using computer graphics software. The acquired skills and knowledge, and the ability to read, summarize and comment on a scientific paper, will be tested via individual writing and presentation assignments.

(100% AST. 50% written assignment + 50% presentation assignment. The individual grade of the literature review and oral presentation should be minimal 5.5)
