Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:

1. Describe biological processes from a physical point of view

2. Use physics-based approaches to study biological processes

3. Analyze for example cell division, molecular motors, DNA, protein structure and enzyme function

4. Follow more specialized courses that built onto the foundation laid down here
Omschrijving In this course a general introduction to molecular and cellular biophysics is provided. It furthermore gives an overview of topics and approaches taken in biophysics. Using the cell as a starting point and the ambition to do quantitative biology we discuss and analyze the fascinating physics that goes on at the (sub)-cellular level. To do this, we introduce and discuss the properties, structure and mechanics of biomolecules and biopolymers, diffusion, molecular motors, physics of cell division and DNA sequencing, all complemented by related tutorial sessions. The course ends with student presentations on different topics in current biophysics.
