Leerdoelen | The student…. › … understands the importance of medicinal plants and other natural sources in contemporary pharmacy and medicine, for drug design and development, as a producer of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API’s), and as raw material for herbal medicinal products. › … has basic knowledge of relevant aspects related to herbal medicine: production, product composition and product quality; legal and regulatory issues and the role of the EMA; toxicity and safety, including herb-drug interactions; pharmacology and clinical efficacy (scientific proof and level of evidence); herbal pharmacovigilance (phytovigilance). › … understands the position of herbal medicine (phytotherapy, traditionally used herbal products) in healthcare and society and the tension field between alternative and regular medicine. › …. knows examples of herbal medicinal products in various pharmacotherapeutic areas, including chemistry and pharmacology, possible adverse reactions and interactions, and degree of evidence for clinical efficacy. › …. is able to critically apply the gained knowledge combined with the consultation of reliable scientific literature in his/her future role as a medicines expert. |

Omschrijving | › General introduction to medicinal plants: history, source of drugs and drug development, western and non-western herbal medicine, phytotherapy versus homeopathy. › Herbal medicinal products: production process, product characteristics, product quality, importance of standardisation and the availability of scientific preclinical and clinical data. › EU and Dutch legal and regulatory aspects. › Safety, adverse effects, herb-drug interactions and herbal pharmacovigilance (phytovigilance). › Pharmacology and clinical efficacy, levels of evidence, (lack of) quality of clinical studies with herbal products. › Herbal medicinal products in therapeutics areas: constituents, pharmacology, safety (central nervous system, circulatory tract, digestive tract, respiratory tract, urinary and genital tract, skin, pain and inflammation, immune system). › Reliable sources of scientific information and critical assessment of the literature. › Role of the pharmacist as counsellor (for client, patient, GP) and as devil’s advocate. |
