Omschrijving | The course covers basic concepts of global health, pharmacotherapy, pharmacoepidemiology, pharmacoeconomics and pharmacovigilance. A number of globally relevant chronic and acute diseases are selected as case studies for the course. For each disease, patient cases are presented, some pathophysiological background of the disease, information about the impact/burden of the disease worldwide and relevant treatment guidelines. In particular we focus on the choice of medication, formulation, route of administration, given important patient characteristics including age, gender, comorbidities, contra-indications and drug interactions. This includes comparing effects and side effects of ‘old’ and ‘new’ drugs, based on evidence from clinical trials and observational studies. Other aspects which are covered in case studies are the costs of (new) drugs, global solutions such as the list of essential medicines and the life cycle of medication including the process of approval of new drugs. | ||||||||
