Leerdoelen At the end of the course Physiology and Pharmacology, the student
- Can explain the foremost principles of physiology
- Understands an integrative view of physiology and pharmacology
- Can apply the principles of physiology to the therapeutic approach to pathology using pharmacological interventions, one focus is on Diabetes mellitus
- Understand the underlying mechanisms that affect brain function in behaviour, health and disease
- Can explain the various basic components of the human defense system and describe the effector mechanism of each separate component mechanisms
- Can explain principles such as integrative physiology, homeostasis and signal transduction systems
Omschrijving In the course Physiology and Pharmacology the following topics are discussed:
- Introduction to physiology and pharmacology
- Basic knowledge of a range of physiological, and pharmacological terms and principles (agonist, antagonist etc)
- Communication and homeostasis, integrative physiology, pharmacological principles, receptors and the central and peripheral nervous systems, brain function, the cardiovascular system, endocrinology, respiration, physiology of energy regulation, Diabetes, glucose and insulin.
This course unit dovetails with the learning outcomes A1, A2, A3, A4, A9 and A12 of the Bachelor’s degree programme in Pharmacy.

Entreevoorwaarden This course unit is a prerequisite for Receptor Pharmacology, Pharmacology Practical, Pharmacokinetics, Metabolism & Toxicology, and research and electives at the basic unit Molecular Pharmacology.

Digital examination:
The content of the lectures (plus guest lectures) will be assessed by means of an examination comprising 76 multiple-choice questions. Students will have 2 hours to complete the examination. The real knowledge percentage is set at 55% real knowledge, and the pass mark is subsequently calculated, corrected for the random chance. Random chance for 4 answer multiple-choice is 25 percent, 19 answers. Mark: If the score < pass mark: mark = 1.0 + 4.5 * (score - random chance) / pass mark - random chance. If the score > pass mark: mark + 5.5 4.5 * (score - random chance) / number of questions - pass mark). Marks over or equal to 5.5 are a pass and all marks below 5.5 are a fail. The average mark will be rounded off to the nearest whole or half mark; a mark of 5.5 will not be given. Students who fail the examination must take a resit.
