Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1. The student has a good understanding and can identify, discuss, and summarize the basic principles underlying various instrumental techniques used in pharmaceutical analysis.
2. The student has a basic knowledge about the most common analytical instrumental techniques and insight into the possibilities and limitations of these techniques. The student can apply this to practical work in pharmacy.
3. The student has some practical experience with chromatographic separation, electrochemical and spectroscopic techniques.
4. The student has some experience in critically analyzing and assessing experimental measurements and discussing results as well as in in writing short lab reports.
Omschrijving In this course the following subjects are addressed:
• the principles of a number of instrumental analytical methods used in pharmaceutical analysis, clinical chemistry, toxicology, bioanalytical, medicinal chemistry, pharmacology and
pharmaceutical technology;
• the fundamental physicochemical principles on which the measurement is based and the construction of the instrument, insight into the possibilities and limitations of the method;
• UV-VIS absorbance and fluorescence spectroscopy. Electrochemical principles: redox reactions, the electrochemical cell & electrode potentials; electrochemical analytical methods:
voltammetry, and (bi)amperometric endpoint detection in titrations.
• Separation methods: fundamentals of chromatography, focused on
high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

• the emphasis is on learning to use the equipment, understanding the underlying theory;
• Bi-Amperomic titration using electrochemical endpoint
• Voltammetric titration of drug preparations
• UV-Vis spectrophotometry: determination of pharmaceuticals,
• HPLC: determination of drug preparations and determining chromatographic analysis variables
• critically analysing and assessing measurements and results.

(Written exam (50%: 60% open questions and 40% multiple choice questions); Report (5%: First report : 30%, Second report 70% To successfully complete the practical part of the course the average grade of both reports has to be 5.0 or higher.); Practical (45%: The practical work will be assessed by the "voorbespreking" (40%), conducting experiments (20%), and labjournal and "nabespreking" (40%)). Students must pass both the written exam and the practical. The final grade is constituted of the following parts: Written Exam: 50% Practical: 50%)

Entreevoorwaarden Successfully completion of Pharmaceutical Analysis A is a mandatory entry requirement for the Instrumental Analysis course.
The ARCS course on lab report writing, taught in May/June is a necessary introduction to this skill, necessary for all courses with practical in y2.
Opmerkingen Students have to achieve a grade of 5.5 in the exam.
The average grade of the practical part (average of all three experiments) has to be 5.5 or higher.
In case exactly one experimental grade in below 5.5, it must not be below 4.0.
In case, exactly two experimental grade are below 5.5, neither of them must be below 5.0.
The average grade of the reports must be not lower than 5.0
Only the first lecture is mandatory (introduction to safety in the lab etc.). Student need to attend to pass the course.
