Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
know the reaction mechanisms involved in polymer synthesis and the kinetics of these reactions.

understand the basic concepts of polymer chain architecture, structure and morphology, with particular emphasis on the relationship between chemical structure (chain architecture) and the morphology of the solid state (semi-crystalline vs. amorphous polymers)
calculate number and weight average molecular weight from given distributions and to specify methods for the measurement of number and weight average molecular weight and also the entire molecular weight distribution.
have basic knowledge of the thermal and mechanical properties of polymers, particularly the crystallization temperature and elementary aspects of crystallization kinetics, the melting temperature and the glass transition, stress/strain behavior, visoelasticity, nonlinear mechanical and rheological behavior and how these properties depend on structure.
know the basic aspects of solution properties of polymers, interactions and the relationship to chemical structure, including phase behavior and the measurement of molecular weight.
know how to process polymers, and how the processing influences the final properties of the material and common plastic parts.
Omschrijving This course unit aims to introduce students to the discipline of polymers. Students will be given an introduction to the discipline of synthetic polymers, their synthesis, characterization, properties and processing.

Entreevoorwaarden The course unit assumes prior knowledge acquired from Organic Chemistry 1 and 2, Inorganic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry 2 from the degree programme.
Opmerkingen The end mark is based upon:
- The written exam (accounts for 70% of the final grade)
- A presentation during the tutorials (accounts for 30% of the final grade)
The presentation is mandatory for this course. Without presentation no final grade will be given.
A minimum score of 5.0 for the final exam has to be reached to pass this course. Should the score of the final exam be lower, "fail" will be registerd.

The presentation is mandatory. No presentation given results in no final grade.
