Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1.
Explain the physical organic principles of catalysis.
2.

Name and describe the main areas of catalysis (heterogeneous, homogeneous and biocatalysis) and reproduce some of the important applications (reactions) of these forms of catalysis
3.
Explain (hypothetical) experimental observations using the mechanism of these reactions
4.
Describe the key techniques used in (bio)catalysis and explain which techniques to use in a particular (hypothetical) situation.
Omschrijving The course will provide a general introduction to the field of catalysis.

Topics include
1. Physical organic chemistry behind catalysis
2. Acid/base catalysis
3. Homogeneous catalysis: transition metal catalysis, organocatalysis, asymmetric catalysis
4. Heterogeneous catalysis
5. Biocatalysis

(Lectures: 30 hours, Tutorials: 2 hours, Assignment: 4 hours, Self study: 104 hours.)
Toetsvorm Opdracht (AST), Schriftelijk tentamen (WE)
(The literature assignment will be concluded by an oral presentation & discussion. Only when this is satisfactory, the student will be allowed to do the final test. The final mark will be calculated by taking the points from the exam (max 100) and dividing them by 10, rounding to half marks (with the exception of 5.5))

The course unit is compulsory for the BSc Chemistry, tracks Chemistry of life and Sustainable chemistry and energy.
