Faculteit Science and Engineering
Jaar 2021/22
Vakcode WBCH011-05
Vaknaam Linear Algebra & Multivariable Calculus for Chemistry
Niveau(s) bachelor
Voertaal Engels
Periode semester I b
(dit vak wordt ook buiten deze periode aangeboden; zie opmerkingen)
ECTS 5
Rooster Ib, IIb

Uitgebreide vaknaam Linear Algebra & Multivariable Calculus for Chemistry
Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1. Determine vector properties (linear independence, basis, dimension).
2. Analyse and solve systems of linear equations.
3. Set-up and analyse linear transformations.
4. Perform matrix operations (multiplication, inverse).
5. Compute determinants.
6. Compute eigenvalues and eigenvectors and employ these in practical applications.
7. Solve systems of first-order linear differential equations.
8. Compute and analyse basic geometry (lines, planes and intersections).
9. Perform partial differentiation.
10. Compute extremes, gradient, tangent planes, and linear approximations.
Omschrijving In this course, first basic concepts and skills in the area of linear algebra are discussed.
Subsequently, functions of one variable are extended to multi-variable functions, with topics such as: partial derivatives, directional derivatives, gradients, extrema and multiple integration.
The material is illustrated through examples that focus on the applications of mathematical techniques.

(The grade for this course is composed as max(FE, 0.2 H + 0.2 ME + 0.6 FE) where FE is the mark for the final exam, ME is the mark for the midterm exam and H is the mark for the homework assignments. If the mark for the final exam is less than 4.5 then the grade is given by the mark for the final exam. ME and H do not count for the re-exam. Programmable calculators are not allowed.)
