Leerdoelen Acquiring knowledge and insights with respect to the analysis and the description of simple multi-phase chemical conversion processes.
Students will be able to:
1. Understand and describe mass transfer accompanied by chemical reactions, derive the conversion equations that are required to calculate conversion rates at micro-scale.
2. Implement the above mentioned conversion rates into model reactors.
3. Solve not too complicated reaction engineering problems for multi-phase systems for both homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions respectively.
4. Translate and implement acquired knowledge into the design of particulates-based products and the related processing operations.
Omschrijving In the chemical, pharmaceutical, food, energy and product industry respectively multi-phase processes are frequently encountered. Characteristic in all these multi-phase processes is that the reactants that are required for the process are present in different phases, e.g. gas and liquid phase respectively. Therefore at least one of the reactants has to be transported to the so-called reaction phase.
The subjects of this course are the fundamentals of mass transfer accompanied by chemical reactions. Besides homogeneous reactions, with reactants present in different phases, also heterogeneous reactions are dealt with, e.g. catalytic reactions in porous and non-porous catalyst particles. The focus is to design and calculate the performance of multi-phase reactors or the conversions of heterogeneous processes. The course Multi-phase Reactors is a consecutive step to Single-phase Reactors. It is a requirement that the fundamentals of the latter course are well understood before starting with Multi-phase Reactors.

The student will become familiar with the characteristics of mass transfer parameters, reaction rates, catalysts and Multi-phase reactors. As mentioned above it is aimed at the description and design of Multi-phase Reactors.

The course unit is compulsory for all BSc Chemical Engineering degree programmes and compulsory in the BSc Industrial Engineering Management programme in the PPT track.
