Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1. Describe and explain basic key cell biological concepts and apply this knowledge in biomedical research aimed at characterizing the mechanism(s) underlying a specific disease, and to develop new diagnostic methods or therapies (e.g. protein quality control to neurodegenerative diseases).
2. Critically analyze and evaluate a research article before illustrating this in the format of an oral Newsflash presentation.
Omschrijving Knowledge in cell biology is essential for fundamental and biomedical research. Thus, intracellular processes associated to diseases are explained and subsequently discussed in the context of the development of diagnostic tools and therapies. The proposed topics cover: 1) cell contacts and polarization, 2) neuroplasticity 3) protein folding, 4) degradation mechanisms, and 5) stem cell biology. Each theme is connected to a specific disease. Insights into the disease pathophysiology are also given during the patient/clinical lectures.

The course will start with up to 3 hours of refresher lectures recapitulating some of the cell biology basics that are required to follow the rest of the course. The following lectures will be organized into 4 blocks. A specific medical theme is central to each block. The clinical problems will be outlined during the patient lectures. The 4 block lectures are concluded with two questions-answers sessions, where unclear points provided by the students are discussed.

Entreevoorwaarden There are no mandatory entrance conditions. However, the course requires prior knowledge of cell biology acquired from introductory courses of the bachelor program. The course will start with refresher lectures on cell biology basics at text book level.

Students from other degree programmes than Biology and/or Life Science & Technology who would like to participate in this course unit are obliged to request admission from the BSc Biology programme team via After this contact, students also have to contact one of the academic advisors before enrolling in this course in order to check whether they have met the entrance requirements. Failing to follow this entire procedure before the official enrollment deadline results in immediate unenrollment without prior notification. Please be aware that almost all course units within the BSc Biology programme are 3-week full-time courses ("blokvakken") and are difficult to combine with courses from other programmes.

Students from the Bachelor's degree programmes Biology and old curriculum Life Science & Technology take priority over students from other degree programmes when the course has a maximum capacity.
  • Some Patient/Clinical lectures will be given in Dutch but in that case a short summary in English will be provided to the students. All others lectures will be given in English. The slides used for accompanying all the lectures (including the Patient/Clinical lectures), will be in English.
  • Written exam counts for 2/3 of final grade. Minimal grade to pass is 5.5. Written exams below 5.5 can be retaken. Oral Newsflash counts for 1/3 of the final grade. Minimal grade to pass is 5.5. Oral Newsflashs below 5.5 can be retaken once but then the maximum grade given to the student is 6. Both written exam and oral Newsflash presentation must be graded with 5.5 or higher to pass the course
  • Patients/Clinicians lectures, introduction lectures and Newsflash tutor sessions are mandatory. Missing more than one of these lectures without (prior) acceptable justification, will lead to an exclusion of the student from the the written exam or a default grade of 1 on the assignment. Missing more than one tutor group session will lead to exclusion of oral Newsflash exam
