Leerdoelen At the end of the course unit, students are able to:
1) describe the various imaging techniques that are used in radiology departments,
2) give a global run-down of how each technique works,
3) explain the differences between the various techniques,
4) and study images to determine which techniques have been used.
Omschrijving This course unit explores the basics of the various imaging techniques used in radiology departments. The following subjects from
the book The Essential Physics of Medical Imaging (3rd edition, 2012) by Bushberg are taught in the form of lectures (Chapters 3-
4, 6-10): the interaction between radiation and tissue, image quality, X-ray production and X-ray tubes, radiography,
mammography, fluoroscopy, computer tomography and ultrasound. In addition, hand-outs are provided to teach the basics of
magnetic resonance imaging and image processing.

Entreevoorwaarden The course unit assumes basic knowledge of mathematics and statistics (e.g. Mathematics for Life Sciences, Introduction to Biomathematics and Biostatistics), but these subjects are not compulsory entry requirements.

PLEASE NOTE
Biology and Life Science & Technology (old curriculum) course units are only accessible for students of those degree programmes. Students from other degree programmes who would like to participate in Biology course units are obliged to contact one of the academic advisors before registration. After this contact, students have to request admission from the Board of Examiners Biology/Life Science & Technology. Failing to follow this procedure results in immediate unenrollment without prior notification.

The course unit is taken by around 50 students. Most of them are following the Bachelor’s in LS&T (3rd year) and the rest are taking the Master’s in BME (1st year CEMACUBE)

Student presentations are mandatory. Consequences for missing a presentation with a valid reason: final mark is equal to the mark given for the multiple-choice exam.
