Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:

1.
Quantitatively describe the properties of different galaxy types throughout the universe, the relationships that exist amongst them, as well as how they are determined observationally.

2.
Understand and explain the contribution of large surveys to the field, and will be able to use the associated databases to address simple questions regarding galaxy formation.

3.
Manipulate the basic principles behind the current cosmological model, including e.g. the evolution of perturbations in the standard big bang model and the role of dark matter and its relation to galaxy formation.

4.
Enumerate the different physical processes taking place in galaxies, how they are probed observationally and have a basic understanding of the physics behind these.

5.
Explain the different galaxy formation modeling techniques (semi-analytic, numerical and semi-numerical) and their limitations and advantages, as well as their underlying principles. As an application of this, the student will be able to describe the evolution of disk vs elliptical galaxies.

6.
Quantitatively describe the properties and time-evolution of the intergalactic medium, the formation and evolution of high redshift galaxies and the physics driving the epoch of reionization. The student will also have an understanding of how these are studied observationally and how they are related to each other.

7.
Synthesize the information from the high-redshift to the local/low redshift universe in order to build a global picture of galaxy formation.
Omschrijving The field of galaxy formation and evolution lies at the interface of astronomy, particle physics, and cosmology. In this course we will, taking into account the cosmological evolution of the Universe as a whole, study the processes affecting the gas, stars and dark matter in galaxies and how these may give rise to the variety and properties of galaxies observed throughout cosmic time. The course will provide a skeleton of our current theoretical understanding in conjunction with various observational aspects.

Entreevoorwaarden This is a challenging Masters level elective course from the Astronomy programme. It covers both theoretical and observational approaches. It assumes prior knowledge from a Cosmology as well as a Physics of galaxies (and to a lesser extent radiative processes and astrophysical hydrodynamics) courses. The lectures will outline the general principles but to successfully complete this course the student must do a lot of private study reading papers in the literature and understanding how to set up and solve problems for themselves.
Opmerkingen The written exam accounts for 60% of the final mark. The average grade for 4 homework sets will be 25% of the final grade. 15% of weight is given to a report and presentation from the results of the computer labs.
