Periode semester I (The kick off meeting is early October and the final proposal has to be handed in before 1 March.)

Uitgebreide vaknaam Scientific proposal (also named: PhD Research proposal)
Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1) propose a novel research idea that can be executed by a PhD-student in their field.
2) formulate a realistic and well-argued research plan.
3) explain and sell their research idea to a wider audience (for example, their nanoscience-peers).
4) explain and sell their research idea to the experts.
Omschrijving During the second year of the Top Master Programme in Nanoscience, the student will write a research proposal for a PhD project. A kick-off meeting will be scheduled in October, there will be a progress meeting in January and a feedback meeting early June.

The process of writing a proposal is usually supervised by the supervisor of the master project. So the student must meet regularly with his/her supervisor to formulate an idea and approach, and to put it in writing. For the actual proposal, a template will be provided. The supervisor proposes a grade, but it is the course coordinator who decides the final grade based, in part, on a comparison with the other proposals. This is done to ensure uniformity.

Deadlines and grading:
The deadline to submit the draft version of the proposal to the supervisor is 1 February. The draft has to be send to the supervisor and also to the course coordinator Shirin Faraji (s.s.faraji).
The student must send a pdf of the final proposal to the course coordinator and their supervisor before the deadline (1 March). The supervisor then proposes a grade using the assessment form provided. The supervisor must make a pdf scan of the signed form, and e-mail it to the NS202 course coordinator Shirin Faraji ( Do not mail it to the ESC, this is done by the course coordinator. The NS202 coordinator will moderate and define the final grade after a comparative check, and send the grades to the ESC.

The deadline for the proposal is 1 March. If this deadline is missed, the maximum grade (as per top master rules) is 7.5. The second deadline is 1 May. If the second deadline is also missed, the maximum grade is 6.5 (again per top master rules).

Note: The students have to make clear agreements with the supervisors to make sure that the supervisors have time to give feedback on the draft version and to grade the final proposal.

(Kick off, progress and feedback meeting are mandatory. Workshops presentation and writing research proposal are integrated. Intended study load of 6x28 = 168 hours. 6 scheduled hours and 162 hours practical work by students themselves. Individual guidance by staff members.)
Toetsvorm Verslag (R)
(Grading according to grading form, see: NS202)
Vaksoort master
Coördinator prof. dr. S.S. Faraji
Docent(en) prof. dr. S.S. Faraji
Entreevoorwaarden A BSc degree in either Physics or Chemistry (or equivalent) and completion of the courses of the first year of the Nanoscience programme are required.
Opmerkingen For proposing a grade to the coordinator, the supervisor must use the right grading form.
