Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1.condense a biological process into a minimal but complete physical model
2.decide what physical description (equilibrium mechanics, statistical mechanics, probability theory etc.) is needed to describe the process and with that
3.analyze topics such as replication, transcription, ligand binding, enzyme catalysis, and molecular transport from a physical viewpoint.
4.use the knowledge for practical needs in understanding and judging state-of-the-art models used for biological processes in research articles
Omschrijving a) Lectures (HC) to provide an comprehensive overview of modern biophysics, Part I: (i) basics in biochemistry and cell biology, (ii) thermodynamics and kinetics from a biological viewpoint, (iii) reactions with protons and electrons, (iv) Modern analysis techniques in biophysics; Part II: (v) biological time and space, (vi) physical model building for biology, (vii) biological polymers, (viii) transport processes, (ix) biological membranes (x) molecular motors, Part III: research applications
b) Tutorials (WC) to use the concepts practically and obtain a deeper understanding. Besides practical applications of the lecture content to problems, recent literature is discussed in the tutorial. Additionally there are home-work assignments (HWO) for the content of each lecture.

Entreevoorwaarden The course unit assumes prior knowledge acquired from basic (bio)chemistry courses; unfortunately the Physics students cannot participate in such a course due to the positions of the biochemistry courses in curriculum. The “Molecular Biophysics” lecture hence provides the necessary (bio)chemistry basics in short comprehensive form and has hence no requirements. This creates slight overlap with the content of courses of the Chemistry students, but is absolutely necessary for the Physics students to follow the course.

The course unit is compulsory for the Physics Bachelor (Track: Physics of Life and Health) is an elective in the Chemistry Bachelor.
