Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
has sufficient knowledge and understanding of the various forms of gaseous energy carriers and their physico/chemical properties in order to discriminate optimal functionality and risks in their application

compare suitability of gasses in practical applications for meeting future energy demand
has acquired the appropriate skills (quantification of energy content, resource assessment) to be able to judge the role of gas in the energy chain in the Netherlands
Omschrijving In this course we will systematically analyse the physico/chemical characteristics of the various gasses and their applications for energy generation, followed by a system analysis of the full energy chain, including greenhouse gas emiision and availability of the required resources. The course consists of 4 elements:
1) Natural gas: exploration & production, quatlity, combustion and conversion
2) Biogas: resources, preparation processes, mixing, quality
3) Hydrogen: production, utilisation in combustion, application in fuel cells
4) System analysis: comprehensive energy- and greenhouse gas assessment of
the various chains

Entreevoorwaarden The course unit assumes prior knowledge acquired from thermodynamics from the physics bachelor programme.
Opmerkingen Each student individually writes an essay on the topic“The role of gas in future energy scenarios for the Netherlands”.These essays are reviewed by all 5 teachers.
