Leerdoelen The student…
1) has detailed knowledge enabling identification up to species level of the vast diversity of marine flora and fauna and the relatively large ecological variation compared to the Dutch sandy or silty coastal area.
2) is able to formulate (a) relevant scientific research question(s) based on exploration of a relatively complex marine ecosystem.
3) acquired skills in setting up and performing field research effectively to answer a research question about marine diversity, ecology or ecological interactions.
4) has the ability to review and present the essential content of a scientific paper on ecological factors or interactions of marine Mediterranean organisms.
5) can compose and present a (preparatory) lectures on geological and biological history, ecology and diversity of the Mediterranean Sea.
6) is able to concisely report about the results and conclusions from self-performed field work in a scientific paper, with extensive reference to relevant literature.
7) learned to critically review written work (sections of report paper) of fellow students, and deal with review critics on own work.
Omschrijving A–LECTURES = Introduction lecture by coordinator: Introduction on marine Mediterranean rocky shores, on formulating scientific questions, and on setting up and performing field work aiming to answer those questions.
B–PRESENTATIONS = Theoretical and Practical preparation for field work: All participating students prepare and give a presentation based on an existing scientific paper about ecological processes, factors or interactions of Mediterranean flora and fauna. The presentations are graded as part of the end grade.
C–STUDENT LECTURES = Preparation of a full-size lecture on assigned subjects (all on MRS): 1)Oceanography, 2) Geological history, 3)Messinian Salinity Crisis, 4) Geography + related Mar Biology, 5)Biol. history, 6) Effects of Suez-canal, 7)Endemism, 8) Rocky shore ecology, 9)Marine flora, 10)Invertebrate marine fauna, 11)Vertebrate marine fauna, 12)Fish breeding biology.
The lectures are evaluated and graded on content and on presentation performance as part of the end grade.
D–FIELD COURSE = Practical field course at the ‘Station de Recherche Sous-marine et Oceanographiques’ (STARESO) near Calvi at the north-west cape of the Isle of Corsica, incl: Exploration & identification of local underwater flora & fauna; Define and design a research project within the themes Functional Diversity, Functional Ecology or Ecological Interactions; Collect field data during about 10 days with a small group of students, if necessary combined with lab work at the Stareso wet and dry labs, to answer the research question. I.e. Design field ‘sampling’ methods, distribution of work load, perform field work (snorkling), first processing of data, presentation of first results.
The field course includes daily progress meetings with students and staff (every morning at 9 am).
E–PEER REVIEW=Critically review the Conclusions and Scientific Discussion section of report-papers of fellow students, and take in and process critical review of own work.
F-REPORT PAPER=Writing of an individual report in the form of a scientific journal paper (e.g. as in Marine Biology) including an Introduction from the literature, Materials & Methods, Results, Conclusions & Discussion.

Entreevoorwaarden The student must have official allowance to the MSc Marine Biology program or one of its sister programs.
Opmerkingen FINANCES: Although the course is heavily subsidized by the Marine Biology program, this course needs a substantial financial commitment from the participating students (estimated between 600 and 700 €), the exact amount will be communicated later.
DIVE EXCURSIONS in the ‘Golfe de la Revellata’:
During the field period at STARESO a few dive excursions will be organised under supervision of dive instructors from the institute. Students are allowed to participate when they are able to show their personal dive certificate (e.g. NOB*, PADI-OW, etc), a valid medical clearance (less than 1 yr old) and a diving log book showing their experience. The dive instructors decide on allowance for participation of the dive excursions and on group composition.
