Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1) Present research hypotheses based on a beforehand agreed scientific topic.
2) Critically reading scientific literature and evaluating research findings to prepare for active participation (discussion) in research.
Omschrijving The Current Themes seminar series focuses on recent and/or controversial developments in ecology and evolutionary biology.
Occasionally, a topic may be chosen that is related to methodology. Current Themes is open to all Master students (including MEME
and Top Masters Programme in Evolutionary Biology), PhDs and post-docs. We hope and expect that the Current Themes will
become an increasingly important forum for the exchange of new insights and ideas within our research institute. Critical thinking,
analysis and active participation are crucial.Each series runs for 12 weeks and consists of six biweekly sessions. Occasionally two
different series are run concurrently so that over the 12-week period, it is possible to follow two topics (2 ECTS each) if desired.
The first 12-week period takes place between November to February and the second 12-week period with two new topics takes
place between February to May. The sessions take place on alternating Monday afternoons from 16:00 to 17:30 in the Centre for
Life Sciences.
Selected articles are placed on Nestor. There is typically a primary article and a few secondary ones. All participants are expected
to read the primary article for each week. Each session is introduced with a short PowerPoint presentation of 15-20 min which then
opens the Discussion. Active participation is essential.
If you are taking the course for credit, you will be responsible for one of the weekly presentations and leadership of the discussion.
You are expected to attend all six sessions. One session can be missed; a second miss will require a make-up assignment; and three
misses will result in no credit.
Examples of previous topics include:Data analyses in R, Cause and correlation in ecology, Model selection, Genomics in Microbial
Ecology Application of genetic methods in ecology and conservation, Global change and plant functioning, and From simple to
complex social organization and Early-environmental effects on adaptation later in life.
