Scientific English Writing |
Leerdoelen |
Present their research results in an academic paper at a CEFR C1 level, following the academic conventions of Spatial Sciences publications. |
Omschrijving |
The course unit Scientific English Writing sharpens the students’ English writing skills in an academic context. The students use data collected and/ or analyzed in their IRT project or Research Internship to write an academic working paper. Students bring a piece of scientific writing they are working on; normally this will be the final document of the Individual Research Training and or Research Internship. At the start of the course, they have already written a first draft of this IRT or Research Internship work structured into the standard scientific paper format of introduction, methods, results and discussion sections. This structure assures effective feedback by the instructor on English writing in an academic context. Students also bring 2 or 3 iconic papers from their field to the instructor, to act as points of reference for the style of writing in the field. The course is offered by the Language Center of the Faculty of Arts and focuses on one-to-one feedback on the progressive writings of the student; writing with the purpose of publishing academic work. To stimulate reflection on style and experience different types of feedback students will do a number of peer-reviews of each other’s work. The course only concerns the improvement of the English text for academic publishing purposes but does not provide a scientific review of the paper being written. After the course, the working paper may be further developed into a peer reviewed journal article or other academic publication. |
