Leerdoelen | Upon completion of the course, students: 1. Know how and why to formulate research objectives and research questions; 2. Know how to critically engage with academic texts; 3. Can situate their research in ontological and epistemological debates; 4. Can write a theoretical framework; 5. Can create a conceptual model; 6. Can define relevant concepts and operationalise these; 7. Can provide arguments for which methods of data collection and analysis are appropriate methods to get answers to their research questions; 8. Are aware and respectful of ethical aspects of social science research; 9. Have a detailed understanding of the research process in all its facets; 10. Can prepare and present a research proposal; 11. Can participate and give feedback to their peers in class, seminars and practicals, in a constructive and critical manner. |

Omschrijving | In the course, students learn to go through the research process, i.e. from addressing ontological and epistemological questions, situating oneself in a paradigm, to formulation of objective and research questions, to the application of theory and conceptual models, to the definition of concepts, and selection and description of an appropriate study design. Students go through these parts of the research process by writing a research proposal for their Master’s thesis, the research for which will in principle take place in semester 2. After the course, students have profound insight into the theoretical and methodological underpinnings of academic research in the spatial sciences. They know how to go through the research process, and can apply this in a research project of their own. |
