Leerdoelen At the end of the course the student shoul be able to:
1.outline the basic (fundamental) knowledge in the general field of interfacial engineering (see course description)
2.recognize, interpret and describe interfacial phenomena and their role in determining the properties of various chemical products and process
3. define and calculate or estimate parameters relevant for interfacial engineering
4.use the acquired knowledge for the solution of numerical problems in the field of interfacial engineering
5.interpret numerical results in the context of process/product engineering
Omschrijving In this course the students learn to use those parts of colloid chemistry and surface science that are important for the design and development of structured products, such as emulsions, gels, adhesives, coatings and composites, and for industrially relevant processes such as oil recovery, water purification and catalytic conversions.

The subjects are:
1. Intermolecular and interparticle forces, Hamaker constant
2. Surface and interfacial tension and energy; Laplace pressure
3. Adhesion, cohesion, wetting and spreading; contact angle
4. Adsorption at interfaces, surface excess, Gibbs and Langmuir isotherms
5. Surfactants, micelles and self-assembly
6. Kelvin equation, nucleation and flocculation, Ostwald ripening
7. Colloids and their preparation and stability, electric double layer, zeta-potential
8. Emulsions and their preparation and stability, mechanisms of droplet breakup under shear, rheological properties
9. Polymers at Interfaces, blends, composites and polymeric surfactants

The course covers the fundamental aspects of colloid and surface sciences, and gives some examples of their applications in Product/Process Engineering.

Entreevoorwaarden The course unit assumes prior knowledge acquired from general courses (bachelor level) in general, organic and physical chemistry
Opmerkingen Attendance to the first lecture is mandatory, unless a valid justification is provided in advance and approved by the lecturer. In case of unjustified absence, the student can still request an appointment with the lecturer to provide a valid explanation. The consequence of not attending and not providing a valid justification is the exclusion from the course for the running academic year.

To pass the course the students has to score at least 5.5 points in the written exam
