Leerdoelen  At the end of the course the students should: 1) have acquired basic (fundamental) knowledge in the general field of Interfacial Engineering (see course description above) and in particular the relationship between interfacial phenomena and their role in determining the properties of various chemical products and processes; be able to use that knowledge for the solution of numerical problems 2) be able to assess whether a given solution strategy is appropriate for a given problem or not. 

Omschrijving  In this course you learn to use those parts of colloid chemistry and physics that are important for the design and development of structured products. The subjects are: 1. Interaction Forces 2. Fluid Interfaces 3. Colloids and Their Stability 4. Micelles and Emulsions 5. Polymers at Interfaces Examples of applications of Interfacial Phenomena in Product/Process Engineering are also discussed.

Entreevoorwaarden  The course unit assumes prior knowledge acquired from general courses (bachelor level) in organic and physical chemistry.  
Opmerkingen  The final written exam typically consists of 45 questions. The majority of these are meant to check the acquired knowledge on interfacial phenomena (LO 1). As such they are designed as purely numerical calculations (e.g. calculate the Van der Waals energy of attraction between two molecules). Some of these questions have a final subquestion related to LO2 and mainly the applicability of a given theory (e.g. calculate the surface tension according to different methodologies and comment on the reason why the results are different with each other and with respect to experimentally measured values). Typically a question out of the total 45 (usually designated with a *) is very difficult since it clearly requires a helicopter view of the subject (related to LO2) and the applicability of a given theory. A typical example: calculate a given physical quantity (with a given equation). It turns out that (on purpose) the equation has no (physically reasonable) solution. The student is asked to comment on this by specifying the reasons for this, which in turn is mainly related to the lack of applicability of the equation.
