Leerdoelen At the end of the course, the student is able to:
1. differentiate the reactivity associated with various functional groups and achieve functional group interconversion via redox and protecting groups chemistry
2. identify carbonyl/imine (enolate) chemistry and relate it to the synthesis of organic molecules
3. describe, contrast and illustrate specifics of B, Si, P and S organic chemistry
4. recognize rearrangements/neighboring group participation and pericyclic process and apply them in the synthesis
Omschrijving Organic synthesis: methods and strategy 1 is a specialized course to build on prior study in synthetic organic chemistry, with the aim to develop a more advanced understanding and synthetic strategies in organic chemistry. The course is about the reactivity of organic molecules, and how this reactivity is used in the synthesis of molecules using modern synthetic methods. The topics covered by this course are: selectivity in synthesis, reductions /oxidations, protecting groups, modern aldol reactions, enolate chemistry in general, the organic chemistry of B, Si, P and S; controlling the double bond geometry, pericyclic reactions with their applications in organic synthesis and finally chemistry involving participation, rearrangement and fragmentation processes.

Toetsvorm Schriftelijk tentamen (WE)
(Written exam with open questions ( about 3 to 6 subdivided question) that tests application of various concepts in synthetic problems, knowledge of chemical method and ability to contrast reactivities. Marking scheme: points per question are indicated on the exam for every sub-question. Max number of points is 100. Mark = number of points / 10, rounded off to the nearest 0.5 mark (except between 5 and 6, where rounding takes place to the nearest integer mark). Pass mark: 6)

The course unit advances students knowledge in organic synthesis, prepares students for the Organic synthesis 2 course and provides necessary knowledge for masters research project.
