Omschrijving The course Scientific Reading, Debating and Reflection has as its purpose to fuel scientific curiosity and to create a stimulating atmosphere of academic freedom with room for everyday scientific observations as well as deep-digging questions. In the course students read, discuss, write and present about famous scientifically inspiring books, documentaries, and articles; also relating to the philosophy of science (1a, 1b, 1e, 1f, 2b). Furthermore, all students keep a personal scientific diary in which they track and develop their own scientific expertise, discoveries, problems, observations, and thoughts (1e, 2c). The ReMa course thus organizes doing (small scale) research from day one.
In semester 1a-1b of the first year of the ReMa students have two-weekly meetings with the first-year students, and these meeting and the final essay add up to make a 5EC course, which is separately graded.
The first year 1a-1b course ends with writing an essay. Students write an essay (approximately 1500 words; excluding references) on what they consider to be a key issue in the world of human geography. They can make use of the wide-ranging material that has come about in the classes, from books, to videos or diary entries, but can also a develop an argument from scratch. They address why they think this issue or these issues are of key importance: an essay as a (scientific) position paper. They may also address what role they see for scientific research, turning the end of the essay into a (draft) research agenda (1e, 1f, 2c, 2d, 2h).

Over 1a-2a of both years of the ReMa students have monthly meetings in which both first and second year students are together. Here also, inspiring books are discussed and students keep and share thoughts from their scientific diaries (1e, 1f, 2b). These monthly meetings, their preparation and the keeping of a scientific diary throughout the ReMa program forms the extra assignment part, the non-ECTS-part, of the Research Master. Similar to all other Research Master program in the Netherlands, it is an extra effort of students over and above their 120 ECTS program. It is graded with a pass or fail. During the monthly meetings, students present and discuss with fellow ReMa students; their scientific diary is filed in a digital format at the end of each year.

The classes take the form of group discussions, debates, and presentations directed by experienced researchers. They are designed to familiarize students with a range of analytical and expositional approaches in social science and help them find their own position and sharpen their own ideas in the social science field (2h).
