1 | Academic Writing for ReMa | EBM171A05 |
This course deals with a very important aspect of a career in academia (or similar institutions). That is, writing about own research, no matter whether completed or planned research. Bearing the not so distant future of research master students in mind, students are asked to write a proposal for a three year PhD project. After that, they have to review two other proposals and defend their own proposal (given the two reviews that they receive). In addition, students participate in two workshops. |

4 | Asset Pricing for ReMa | EBM172A05 |
This course surveys the theoretical and empirical asset pricing literature. The most common theories are discussed and linked to classic empirical facts. In addition, econometric tools are provided to test the theories. The target group of this course are Research Master students, that preferably have some background in Finance and a decent background in calculus, algebra, and econometrics. The course highlights how one basic idea, price equals expected discounted payoff, unites everything - models that describe stocks, bonds, options, real investments, discrete time, continuous time, asset pricing, portfolio theory, and so forth. The course starts with a recap of the stylized facts of asset markets. Then, the we introduce the main pricing equation that is build on the underlying consumption-based model and relate it to some classic issues in finance. After having outlined the big ideas of the whole class we study contingent claims and the theorems showing the existence of a discount factor. The course explores the mean-variance frontier and links it to expected return-beta models and factor structures. The classic linear models such as the CAPM, APT, ICAPM are discussed to illustrate these ideas. Finally, the course introduces GMM to estimate and evaluate asset pricing models, as well as the classic regression tests. |

6 | Behavioural Decision Making for ReMa | EBM173A05 |
Decision making is a process of evaluating alternative courses of action to reach certain goals, eventually resulting in a choice for a particular course of action. In behavioral decision making research, the focus is not so much on what people should choose (i.e., what the best course of action is), but more on how people choose. For example, people often depart in predictable ways from rationality, and their decision making processes are affected by momentarily salient motives or emotions. This affects whether or not people postpone decisions, whether they act in self-interested or pro-social ways, and whether they buy unnecessary products. In this course, we examine basic theories and findings from behavioral decision making, focusing on issues of rationality and irrationality (e.g., heuristics, biases), interdependent decision making (social dilemma’s, experimental games), and the role of motivation and emotions. We also zoom into three areas of application: choice avoidance, consumer decision making, and ethical decision making. |

7 | Behavioural Economics and Exp. Design | EBM174A05 |
This course consists of two parts: 1. Behavioral Economics (BE); 2. Experimental Design (ED). The goal of the BE part of the course is to gain understanding on how non-standard preferences affect economic decision making and to gauge the importance non-standard preferences in determining behavior in various economic contexts. Taking the survey article by DellaVigna (2009) as our point of departure, we will subsequently study models of reference-dependent preferences, non-standard time preferences and social preferences and consider the empirical evidence. Upon completion of the BE part, you will understand the working of the major models of non-standard preferences, such as prospect theory, the beta-delta model of quasi-hyperbolic discounting, intentions-based models and models of fairness and social preferences and of inequity aversion. You will be able to quantitatively and qualitatively assess the implications of these models on individual decision-making and on economic outcomes and be in a position to critically evaluate international journal articles about (the implications of) behavioral economics. In the ED part of the course, you will learn about the different categories of field experiments and how they are different from, and complement lab experiments. You will learn the value of properly organized randomized control trials (RCTs) for impact evaluation. A number of case studies in development economics receive an in-depth treatment. The studies are selected such that you learn how experimental research furthers the debate regarding how and to which extent behavioral insights should be incorporated into economic theory. By studying a number of empirical papers and preparing a presentation of one of these, you will gain an understanding of the critical elements and the pitfalls in designing and conducting lab and field experimental studies. Students who are serious in studying these topics (which should include anyone wanting to do a PhD in economics, econometrics or finance) are highly advised to take the courses Game Theory and Oligopoly (ReMa), Advanced Industrial Organization (MSc EORAS), Corporate Finance (ReMa) and Development Economics (ReMa) as electives. The first gives a much more complete introduction in game theory. The second studies further issues in Industrial Organization. The third applies game theory to problems in finance. The latter focuses on Economics of Development, which complements the ED part of this course. |

9 | Corporate Governance for ReMa | EBD001A05 |
The last two decades showed an increasing attention for the governance of large (multinational) corporations. This increase was generated by a number of developments, including scandals at Ahold, Enron, and Siemens, the fierce debate surrounding executive compensation and, last but certainly not least, the financial crisis. These and numerous other cases show that effective governance is crucial for organizations. That is, the manner in which the mechanisms, processes, and relations by which listed firms are controlled, directed, and supervised are structured is crucial for organizational success. During this course, students learn how to critically evaluate governance research, how to apply theories and findings from such research to help students identify research topics in an area that has become a focal point for political regulation and reform in Europe and around the world. As all instructors are member of SOM’s signature area on board effectiveness (https://www.rug.nl/research/som-ri/signature-areas/board-effectiveness/) the course offers a multi-disciplinary research approach to corporate governance.
The aim of this course is to provide students with in-depth knowledge of how the determinants and outcomes of corporate governance arrangements have been measured and studied in the academic literature, allowing them to critically evaluate governance research. As the field of corporate governance is extensive, we will focus on a number of topics that are of interest. The topics that will be chosen are particularly relevant as they are hotly debated in academic and corporate circles (e.g., board composition, board processes, executive pay, role of shareholders, etc.). During the course, students are expected to actively participate in discussions during the combined lectures/tutorials. Moreover, students will engage in an individual assignment to promote their understanding of the concepts discussed and to develop a hands-on approach to designing sound research related to corporate governance |

16 | Empirics of Growth | EBM178A05 |
How do we measure growth and development in countries? Traditionally, economists rely on the concept of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). However, it is well acknowledged that measuring GDP is not straightforward, and that although it provides a good first pass, welfare is a much broader concept (beyond GDP). Is economic theory capable of providing alternative measures? In this course we will show that it does. We start by laying out the main trends in the world economy, and have a first pass on its determinants using advanced measurement techniques of comparative output and productivity levels. We move on discussing recent alternatives to the measurement of long-run GDP including real wages used in economic history, social indicators and even night-lights seen from outer space. Measures beyond GDP including welfare, inequality and sustainability will also be addressed. Throughout the course the emphasis is on theory-based measurement frameworks. |

20 | International Trade | EBM180A05 |
Three topics are analyzed in depth: Show that trade is beneficial from a welfare point of view but that: showing this is difficult, and that not all agents benefit from more trade and globalization. Furthermore, one of the remarkable recent findings w.r.t. international trade is that most international trade is done by a limited number of firms. These findings are based on micro-firm data-sets that only recently have become available. Findings like these have been a stimulus for theoretical research. The most successful study in this respect is the recent work by Marc Melitz; his model has become the standard model to analyze data sets on heterogeneous firms. Finally, The recent trend of slicing-up-the value chain is beneficial for firms (and we will show why) but this also affects the organization structure of global firms. How organizational structures need to be adapted is also part of the course. |

27 | Microeconomic Analysis | EBM183A05 |
In this course we study the behavior of rational actors (profit-maximizing firms and utility-maximizing consumers) in competitive markets with the aid of formal, mathematical models. While the theory of competitive markets is a useful tool to understand the economy, the underlying assumptions are strong. Therefore, in the course we will also investigate the case where some of these assumptions do not hold (externalities, imperfect information). |

32 | Philosophy of Science and Research Meth. | EBM185A05 |
This course focuses on relevant issues of scientific reasoning, research methodology and philosophy of science, respectively. In this course students are exposed to a great variety of concepts and theories from the philosophy of social science and research methodology. Why? The idea is that it is relatively easy to just do a piece of research straightforwardly. But to be truly successful requires creativity and 'out-of-the-box' thinking. One must look at the field from a different point of view to find innovative solutions to old questions, or to ask interesting and relevant new questions. |

33 | Strategic Management for ReMa | EBM187A05 |
This course is aimed at enhancing students' knowledge of the foundations of strategic management research. It is an introductory course especially indicated for future researchers in strategic management or related areas of inquiry, such as international business, organization theory, sociology of organizations, industrial organization, entrepreneurship, marketing strategy, and corporate finance. Along the course, we will introduce and examine a broad range of theories and focus on different research topics informed by these theories. Overall, these theories and topics will help us to answer the fundamental question of strategic management research: Why firms differ in performance. Through the seminars, we will review the main explanations of performance differentials among firms, such as the industry-based view, the resource-based view, industry dynamics, corporate strategies, and issues related to the implementation of these strategies. |

35 | Survey Research | EBM138A05 |
In this course, I hope to expose you to the basics of survey research, provide you with resources, and make you critical thinkers in the research process. It is my goal that by the end of this course, you should have a reasonable start toward designing and conducting a survey study through its various stages of developing a conceptual model with core constructs, identifying or developing appropriate measures, choosing a design and sample, collecting data, analyzing data, and interpreting findings. In doing so, another thing I hope to make clear is that there are advantages and disadvantages to each choice made along the way. Finally, in addition to being able to design and conduct your own research, by the end of this course you should be able to critically evaluate others? research (at least on methodological grounds). |

37 | Trade, Environment and Growth | EBM097A05 |
This course (for which some basic knowledge of matrix algebra is indispensable) applies input-output analysis to issues on trade, on environment, and on growth. For the production of commodities and services, industries depend on other industries for their intermediate products. More and more, such linkages between industries cross borders. Input-output analysis is a tool that takes such interdependencies in the production structure into full account. It has been applied to a wide variety of topics, ranging from international and development economics to disciplines dealing with energy and environmental issues. The course will focus on three such topics. Typical questions are the following. How much high-skilled labor in the US is involved in satisfying the demand for cars by households in Australia, reflecting trade in production factors? What is the greenhouse gas footprint of China, or how large are the Chinese exports of greenhouse gas emissions? What percentage of the growth in German GDP between 1995 and 2009 was due to the increased household consumption in the rest of the EU? To analyze these questions, the World Input-Output Database will be used. |
