Leerdoelen | At the end of the course, the student is able to: 1. - identify and explain the ingredients and concepts that enter advanced mathematical physics calculations; 2. - perform concrete calculations by using advanced exact methods and various approximation schemes that are necessary for research in physics and related fields; 3. - use the various methods and concepts to solve problems partly drawn from physics research; 4. - justify the use and judge the applicability of the various methods. |

Omschrijving | The course addresses advanced topics in mathematical physics that connect to physics research. During the course students have to hand in their solutions of more-or-less advanced problems, which are to be solved after the corresponding lectures, tutorials and additional self-study of the pertinent topics. Topics to be covered include aspects of complex analysis, in particular integration and the steepest descent method, asymptotic expansions, various integral transforms, distributions and Green's functions, calculus of variations, and special functions. The level of mathematical rigor will reflect the practice in physics. The students have to solve problems that are partly drawn from physics research. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
