Omschrijving | This course is about the properties of Lie groups and Lie algebras and the applications in physics. After first discussing some general properties of Lie groups and Lie algebras, the lectures will focus on specific Lie groups of relevance to physics: the compact Lie groups SO(N) and SU(N), and the non-compact Lorentz and Poincaré groups. Applications in physics, especially in quantum mechanics and particle physics, will be given throughout the course. Specific subjects to be covered include: the exponential map, the adjoint representation, Young tableaux, and more advanced aspects of Lie algebras and their representations, such as root systems, the Weyl group, the classification of semi-simple Lie algebras, Dynkin diagrams, weights and Casimir operators. Familiarity with groups and representations of groups will be assumed, but essentials will be recalled at various stages.

Entreevoorwaarden | The course unit assumes prior knowledge acquired from Quantum Physics 1, Quantum Physics 2, Mechanics and relativity. Prior knowledge from the 2nd year course Group Theory (Bachelor Mathematics) and/or the 3rd year course Symmetry in Physics (Bachelor Physics) is advisable.
Opmerkingen | On the written exam the weighting of the questions is specified by means of a table. Answers are compared to a model of correct answers. The number of credit points is 5. The grade of the written exam determines whether the course is passed (grade 6 or higher) or not. This course was registered last year with course code WMPH13010 |
