Omschrijving  The course aims to form a fundamental background in dynamics which is indispensable for analyzing dynamic problems in mechanics, engineering, and physics. The first part of the course provides theoretical knowledge on how to describe and analyze the dynamics of a system of rigid bodies and helps to develop mechanical intuition and master practical knowhow in numerical modeling. The emphasis is placed on implementing theoretical concepts in concrete applications and disseminating results in oral and written forms. The learning objectives prepare the students to:
In contrast to traditional courses in mechanics, this course implies the active use of computer tools. The assessment relies on a group project when the students are challenged to model the motion of a real mechanical system. The second part is about the dynamics of 1D and 2D dynamical systems. The key idea is to learn how the mathematical apparatus can be used to understand the nonlinear world around us. The theoretical treatment is rather informal with an emphasis on analytical methods and geometric intuition. The theory is presented systematically, starting with firstorder differential equations and their bifurcations, followed by phase plane analysis, and culminated with limit cycles and their bifurcations.
