Leerdoelen | At the end of the course, the student is able to: 1) Debate and compare the methodology and the potentials and the limitations of the various types of models for energy and materials research. 2) Design a research approach applying the complementary aspects of the various types of models. 3) Argue in depth a complex state of the art energy and materials project. 4) Contribute effectively to the work and organization of the project group. 5) Evaluate their own contribution and the contribution of team members to the research project. 6) Assess their own research and group skills and development. 7) Assess the project/group skills of their project group members. |

Omschrijving | During the 20 weeks of this course (IIA and IIB) students carry out a state of the art research project in a group of 4-5 students. This research project is a means for students to apply different methodology/models for energy and materials research in a relevant real-life context. To distinguish the different type of methodology/models the project is divided in blocks: At the beginning of each block students receive lectures, literature and assignments to get to know the new methodology/models. Students also prepare a research plan for each block. At the end of each block all project groups present their findings in a report and a verbal presentation. Next to this students deliver an individual project assessment (report) covering functioning of themselves, their team(members) and project process. The course is concluded with an individual written examination on the methodology/models and the project. For research projects at the research group IREES (Integrated Research on Energy, Environment and Society) this course is strongly recommended. Without this course it is very difficult and it costs a lot of energy to perform a project with a supervisor from IREES. |

Entreevoorwaarden | Maximum capacity: 60 students. Priority for students from the Master EES (Energy and Environmental Sciences). Prior knowledge acquired from Systems Integration and Sustainability is recommended. The course unit prepares students for 2nd year individual research projects in which the learning objectives attained are required as prior knowledge. For research projects at the research group IREES (Integrated Research on Energy, Environment and Society) this course is strongly recommended. Without this course it is very difficult and it costs a lot of energy to perform a project with a supervisor from IREES. |

Opmerkingen | Pass mark: the final calculated grade needs to be higher than 5.5 and other requirements regarding the assessment have to be met as well, see comments above. Submission of all individual assignments is mandatory. Quality assurance: Two examiners review written examination. Two examiners review quality of assignments and answering models. Two examiners assess quality of group reports. Prior to assessment: Assignments are discussed in the team of lecturers prior to implementation. In case the assessment has to take place online, the written exam will be adjusted to an online written exam from home. Second examiner for the course is dr. RMJ Benders. |
