Leerdoelen | IMPORTANT NOTE: The course will be given biannually instead of every year. The next course will take place in 2021/2022. At the end of the course, the student is able to: 1. explain the physical principles of diagnostic techniques 2. assign spectral features to transitions between quantum states of molecules 3. explain differences between the diagnostic methods 4. select the required diagnostic technique for specific experimental conditions 5. calculate detectability limit for a diagnostic method 6. derive concentration of trace species from measured signals 7. analyze experimental results based on simple models describing a studied object 8. estimate precision and accuracy of measured parameters |

Omschrijving | 1. Structure of molecules and basic principles of optical diagnostic methods. 2. Interaction of electromagnetic waves with radiation. 3. Absorption techniques. Selectivity and detectability limits. 4. Cavity ring down spectroscopy. Fourier transform spectroscopy. 5. Atmospheric trace gas measurements. 6. Isotope ratio mass spectroscopy. 7. Accelerator mass spectroscopy. 8. Gas chromatography. 9. Fossil fuel source validation using 14C. |

Opmerkingen | The both grades of written examination and practicum report should be higher than 5.5. The examination problems are assessed by all 4 lecturers. After assessment: Students have possibility to rebut the obtained grades during one week after obtaining the examination results. This course was registered last year with course code EM4ITG04 |
