Leerdoelen | At the end of this course the student is able to: 1) recognize the characteristics of a good science news article and apply these in writing a science news article for different target groups based on an academic publication with news value. 2) evaluate and process feedback on a draft text into a publishable article. 3) recognize and apply various conversation skills effectively in a conversation. 4) recognize characteristics of good presentation skills and apply these in a presentation 5) design a strategy based on science communication and education theory to communicate about a scientific topic to a specific target group. 6) search for and use appropriate sources when communicating about science. 7) reflect on their actions and products based on experiences and provided feedback from peers and lecturers. |

Omschrijving | This course is the starting point of the EC master. This course can also be chosen as an elective. The course offers an introduction to the field of science communication. During the course, writing, presentation and conservation skills are developed. These skills are important in order to be able to exercise the profession of teacher or science communicator. You write two news articles. You will also write an article for children about a science subject. Also you will develop a communication strategy, based on learning or communication theory to clarify a science-related concept. The aim of the strategy could be to convey knowledge about a topic, to deal with alternative conceptions, or to influence opinions or behaviour. The course does not have a final written examination. At the end of the course you hand your assignments and you give a presentation. During the lectures you participate in discussions. You prepare the lectures by assignments. During the course you hand in different assignments. You give constructive feedback to your fellow students and incorporate received feedback into the final versions of your products. |

Entreevoorwaarden | Students must have gained a Bachelor’s degree certificate. For students who take this course as an elective: the language requirements for this course unit differ from the rest of the faculty. All students for whom English is not their native language (except Dutch students with VWO-level English or students with a bachelor's degree from an English-taught programme) must satisfy the following requirements: - Speaking, writing: IELTS 7.0 (TOEFL 95, CEFR C1, Cambridge English CAP > 180) - Reading, listening: IELTS 6.5 (TOEFL 80, CEFR B2/C1, Cambridge English CAE > 160) |

Opmerkingen | Max. 20 students, students from the MSc in Science Communication and Education have priority over students from other master's programmes who take the course as an elective. Note that the course is given in block-form in 1A, and as a parallel course in 2A. The course in 1a is mainly reserved for students in the MSc in Science Communication and Education, in the course in 2a there is more room for elective students. This course was previously registered with course code WMEC13004 The book is compulsory for EC-master students and recommended for students that follow this course as an elective. |
