Leerdoelen	Upon successful completion of the course unit, students are able to: - demonstrate introductory-level knowledge of theories and theorists germane to the study of American political life covered in this course. - demonstrate alongside their understanding of the main content of the theoretical perspectives covered in the course an adequate sense of the historical contexts out of which those perspectives arose. - articulate some of the ways such theoretical perspectives might inform interpretations of American politics and political life, both in the contemporary period or in earlier historical eras. - write a theoretically-informed, well-argued essay that displays a basic understanding of both the political theories covered in the course and their relation to past and present political debates in the United States.
Omschrijving	This course introduces students to a range of political theories relevant to the study and analysis of American political life. Theorists and thinkers we will study may include: John Locke, Alexis de Tocqueville, Karl Marx, John Dewey, and Hannah Arendt.
