Leerdoelen	After successfully completing the course unit, students are able to (learning outcomes followed by the related outcome at programme level in brackets): The course provides insights how to understand and analyze collective citizenship from different theoretical perspectives, and how to work as a planner with societal energy in different roles, in the context of spatial transformation. After successfully completing the course, students will be able to: 1. Knowledge and Understanding Explain issues in specific administrative and social contexts by acquiring knowledge on the spatial changes in neighbourhoods, cities and regions and their significance for society and sustainability (place analysis). Contribute actively to knowledge development (theories, concepts and methods) from a societal and planning perspective focusing on the human factor. 2. Applying Knowledge and Understanding Apply own academic research designs in specific cases and stakeholder settings by employing gained knowledge on the forces that shape places 3. Forming Judgements Examine the (inter)subjective nature of spatial planning in potential solutions, especially by using power, justice, diversity and human capacity perspectives. Critically assess analyses, spatial representations and visualizations, research strategies and planning interventions proposed by others 4. Communication Present ideas and findings both in oral and written form and through different means of digital and face-to face communication, adjusted to both specialist and non-specialist audiences. 5. Learning Skills Debate and reflect on a repertoire of planning roles to facilitate multi-stakeholder settings, mediating between various opinions, interests and values.
Omschrijving	We see the emergence of citizens and entrepreneurs who collectively take the lead in spatial transformation in the context of place-based development. Examples are initiatives in revitalizing of public space, self-governance in energy production, food, health-care or landscape maintenance, or fostering social cohesion in neighbourhoods and other meaningful everyday places. The course: 1) provides insight in theoretical perspectives on citizen’s engagement based on concepts such as transformation, transition, leadership, and collective action. 2) analyzes the engagement of society in spaces of interaction and the changing roles of spatial planning, resulting in coalitions and institutional arrangements. 3) pays specific attention to the (inter)subjective aspects of planning (motives and values).
